Financial Assistance
There are two opportunities for financial
assistance. Travel awards are given to
graduate students and postdocs who are
presenting authors. Graduate students may
also apply to be a microphone runner at the
meeting and receive a stipend of $120.
Travel Awards
The deadline for receipt of applications for
travel awards is April 7, 2008. The Yeast
Finance Committee obtains funds to assist
those who could not otherwise attend the
meeting. Primary consideration will be given
to graduate students or postdocs who are
presenting authors. Typically the awards
cover the cost of housing and meeting
registration.
To apply, send 1) a copy of your abstract;
2) your curriculum vitae; and 3) a short
paragraph describing your need to: The
Genetics Society of America, YGM Financial
Assistance, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda,
MD 20814. Applications must be received by
April 7, 2008. No e-mail applications will
be accepted. Notifications will be sent to
applicants by mid-June.
Microphone Runners
The YGM is soliciting 18 graduate students
to handle the microphones during the
question and answer periods at the platform
sessions and symposia. Duties will include
carrying a microphone to individuals who
wish to ask questions, turning on the
microphone for them at the appropriate time,
and then turning off the microphone.
A stipend of $120 US will be provided in
return for staffing five 90-minute sessions
throughout the meeting. There are a total of
nineteen 90-minute sessions during the
entire meeting. We will make every effort to
allow microphone runners to sign up for the
sessions of their preference, but may not be
able to assure everyone’s first choice.
To qualify for this position, you must be a
graduate student; attend a training session
on Tuesday, July 22, from 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm
at Convocation Hall and attend the entire
meeting.
Please submit applications via e-mail to
mahoney@genetics-gsa.org with the
following information:
-
First and Last Name
-
E-mail address
-
Your P.I.
-
Year in School
-
Include the following statement: I agree
to staff five 90-minute sessions as a
microphone runner, will attend the
training session on Tuesday, July 22,
from 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm at Convocation
Hall and will attend the entire meeting.
The deadline for receipt of applications is
April 7, 2008. If more than 18 students
apply, the first 18 applications received
will be accepted.
